What Does Wasp Nest Removal Involve?

Wasp nest removal is a two-part job: treating the nest so the entire colony is eliminated, including the queen, then physically removing the nest so it does not attract new activity. For an accessible nest, a professional visit in Hampton Roads usually takes under an hour. Nests inside walls, in the ground, or high in trees take specialized equipment, which is where a licensed professional earns their fee.

Wasp Nest Removal

Paper wasps are the ones you'll usually spot first. They build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, deck railings, mailboxes, grill covers, and playground equipment. A single nest can hold a few dozen wasps by midsummer, and they defend it if you get close.

We treat the nest, remove it completely, and check the rest of the structure. Wasps rarely build just one nest on a property; if there's a second one starting under the other eave, we'd rather find it now than have you find it later.

Hornet Nest Removal

Hornets are a bigger job. Bald-faced hornets build those gray, football-shaped paper nests in trees and shrubs, sometimes the size of a basketball by August. European hornets nest in wall voids and hollow trees and will fly at night, which surprises a lot of homeowners.

Hornets defend their nests aggressively and can sting repeatedly. This is the one job where we'll flat out tell you: don't try it with a can of spray and a ladder. We have the protective gear and the equipment to take down nests at height safely.

Yellow Jacket Removal

Yellow jackets cause more sting incidents in Hampton Roads than any other stinging insect, and late summer is when it happens. By August a colony can hold over a thousand workers, usually in a ground nest you cannot see or inside a wall void you did not know was open.

One important warning: if yellow jackets are entering through a gap in your siding or brick, do not seal the hole. Trapped colonies will chew through drywall and end up inside your house. Call us first; we treat the colony, then you seal the gap for good.

Why the DIY Spray Usually Isn't Enough

We're not going to talk you out of handling a small job yourself. A golf-ball-sized paper wasp nest in early spring, reachable without a ladder? Plenty of folks take care of that on their own.

Where the store-bought spray falls short is anything established. The spray knocks down the wasps you can see, but it rarely reaches the whole colony, and it does nothing for a nest inside a wall or in the ground. What we see all summer is the same story: a homeowner sprays, gets stung, and the nest is active again in a week. If the nest is bigger than your fist, higher than you can reach flat-footed, or anywhere inside the structure, that's the time to call.
