How to Keep Rodents Out of Your Hampton Roads Home Before First Frost

Every autumn in coastal Virginia, thousands of house mice and roof rats search for food and shelter inside residential structures. Once rodents enter crawl spaces or attics, they reproduce rapidly and contaminate building materials.

Step 1: Inspect the Foundation & Crawl Space Vents

Crawl spaces are primary rodent entryways in Hampton Roads. Ensure all vent screens are intact and fitted with heavy-duty galvanized wire mesh. Seal foundation cracks larger than 1/4 inch with copper mesh and silicone sealant.

Step 2: Check Rooflines, Soffits & Ridge Vents

Roof rats are agile climbers that access attics via overhanging tree branches. Trim tree limbs back at least 6 feet from rooflines and install ridge vent guards to block entry.

Step 3: Seal Door Sweeps & Utility Pipe Penetrations

Check garage door sweeps and exterior door weatherstripping for daylight gaps. Ensure HVAC refrigerant lines, outdoor hose spigots, and electrical conduits are tightly sealed where they penetrate exterior walls.
