Discovering you have a bed bug problem is one of the most stressful things a homeowner can experience. It is a situation that immediately brings up feelings of anxiety, embarrassment, and urgency. Because of the stigma surrounding these pests, many families suffer in silence or waste hundreds of dollars on ineffective store-bought treatments before calling a professional.

At Precision Pest Management, we believe in giving you honest answers and clear education. Having bed bugs is not a sign of a dirty home. These pests do not care about cleanliness: they only care about access to a host. This guide explains exactly how to identify bed bugs in your home, where to look for them, and what practical steps you should take if you confirm an infestation.

Why Bed Bugs Are a Unique Challenge in Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads has several environmental and social factors that make bed bug infestations relatively common compared to other regions. Understanding these factors helps explain why an infestation can happen to anyone.

High military transit. With massive installations like Naval Station Norfolk, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, and Oceana Naval Air Station, our region has a constant influx of families relocating from all over the world. Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers, often traveling in cardboard boxes, moving trucks, luggage, and furniture during household moves.

Tourism and vacation rentals. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront attracts millions of visitors every summer. High turnover in hotels and short-term rentals creates continuous opportunities for bed bugs to move from luggage to bedding and then travel back home with unsuspecting vacationers.

Dense student housing. Areas surrounding Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and other local campuses experience high turn-rates for rental units every semester. Shared laundry facilities and secondhand furniture purchases in these areas are common pathways for infestation spread.

The Four Main Warning Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Bed bugs are small and nocturnal, making them difficult to spot directly in the early stages of an infestation. Instead of looking for the bugs themselves, you should look for the evidence they leave behind.

1. Physical bites on your skin. Bites are often the first sign families notice. They typically appear as small, red, itchy bumps arranged in a line or cluster, often referred to as a "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" pattern. Bites commonly occur on areas exposed during sleep, such as arms, shoulders, neck, and face. Note that bite reactions vary. Some people experience severe itching, while others show no physical reaction at all.

2. Dark fecal spotting on sheets and mattresses. After feeding, bed bugs leave behind digested blood droppings. These appear as small, dark brown or black spots that look like marker tips. They are most commonly found along mattress seams, piping, box spring corners, and sheet edges. If you rub a damp cloth over these spots, they will smear like dried blood.

3. Discarded skins and egg casings. As bed bugs grow, they molt and shed their translucent exoskeletons. Finding these papery, light brown casings in mattress seams, behind headboards, or along baseboards is a clear indicator of an active, growing colony. You may also find tiny, pearly-white egg fragments that look like small grains of salt.

4. Unexplained blood stains. You might notice small, bright red or rust-colored blood smears on your pillowcases, sheets, or pajamas. This happens when you accidentally roll over and crush a recently fed bed bug during the night.

How to Perform a DIY Bed Bug Inspection

If you suspect bed bugs, do not wait for the problem to grow. Grab a bright flashlight and a flat card (like an old playing card or credit card) and inspect these areas systematically.

  • Strip the bedding. Remove all sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers. Inspect them carefully for blood spots and fecal stains before placing them directly into a plastic bag to transport to the laundry room.
  • Inspect the mattress seams. Use your flashlight and run the edge of your card along the piping, seams, and folds of the mattress. Push the fabric back to look into the tight crevices where bed bugs prefer to hide during the day.
  • Examine the box spring. Pay close attention to the plastic corner guards and the dust cover on the bottom. Peel back the fabric mesh on the underside and look around the internal wooden frame.
  • Check the headboard and bed frame. Slide the headboard off the wall. Inspect all screw holes, joints, cracks, and the backside of the headboard panel. Bed bugs prefer wood and fabric surfaces over metal.
  • Search the surrounding area. Inspect nightstands (including inside drawers and underneath), baseboards within five feet of the bed, outlet covers, wall hangings, and loose wallpaper edges.

What to Do If You Find Bed Bugs: Immediate Steps

If your inspection confirms bed bugs, taking the right immediate actions can prevent the infestation from spreading to other rooms or neighboring homes.

Do not throw away your mattress. Tearing a mattress out of a bedroom and dragging it through the house is the easiest way to spread bed bugs down the hallway and into the living room. Modern mattresses can be treated and protected with bed bug proof encasements, saving you the expense of replacement.

Do not move rooms. Sleeping in another bedroom or on the living room sofa will cause the bed bugs to follow your heat and carbon dioxide signature, spreading the infestation to other furniture and rooms.

Wash and dry on high heat. Place all bedding, curtains, and clothing from the affected room into garbage bags and seal them. Carry them to the washing machine, wash them, and dry them on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. The heat of the dryer is what kills all life stages of bed bugs, including eggs.

Declutter the space. Remove items from under the bed and around the room. Place books, papers, and personal items into sealed plastic bins. Decluttering reduces hiding spots and makes professional treatments significantly more effective.

Precision's Safe, Targeted Bed Bug Treatments

Bed bugs are notorious for their resistance to over-the-counter chemical sprays. A successful treatment requires professional-grade products, detailed application, and thorough follow-up.

At Precision Pest Management, we use a combination of liquid barrier applications, aerosol crack-and-crevice treatments, and dust formulations in wall voids. This approach targets bed bugs where they hide and provides residual protection to eliminate any remaining pests as they emerge.

Re-entry guidelines. For standard interior bed bug treatments, families and pets must vacate the home during application and remain out for four hours after the treatment is completed. This allows the products to dry fully and settle, ensuring a safe return for children, dogs, cats, and sensitive family members.

We back our bed bug treatments with a comprehensive warranty. Because bed bug eggs take time to hatch, we perform a standard follow-up inspection and treatment two weeks after the initial service to ensure the colony is completely eliminated. If you see bed bugs during the warranty period, we return to treat at no additional cost.
