How to Perform a DIY Bed Bug Inspection

If you suspect bed bugs, do not wait for the problem to grow. Grab a bright flashlight and a flat card (like an old playing card or credit card) and inspect these areas systematically.

• Strip the bedding. Remove all sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers. Inspect them carefully for blood spots and fecal stains before placing them directly into a plastic bag to transport to the laundry room.
• Inspect the mattress seams. Use your flashlight and run the edge of your card along the piping, seams, and folds of the mattress. Push the fabric back to look into the tight crevices where bed bugs prefer to hide during the day.
